DL SCORE

In 2014, Sullivan's Cove French Oak was named the World's Best Single Malt at the World Whisky Awards — the first time a non-Scottish, non-Japanese whisky had ever won. It wasn't a fluke. It was the moment the world realised that Tasmania had been quietly producing world-class whisky while everyone else was looking the other way.

The Distillery

Founded in 1994 in Hobart, Tasmania, Sullivan's Cove was one of the first craft distilleries in Australia. The early years were difficult — the distillery nearly closed multiple times — but head distiller Patrick Maguire persisted, and the 2014 World Whisky Award win changed everything. Today, Sullivan's Cove is Tasmania's most celebrated distillery and a symbol of Australian whisky's global ambitions.

How It's Made

Made from a single batch in a single cask — every bottle of Sullivan's Cove French Oak comes from one individual barrel, meaning no two batches are identical. The spirit is matured in French oak port casks, which impart a distinctive richness and complexity that sets it apart from American or European oak expressions.

"Sullivan's Cove proved that great whisky has no postcode. This bottle changed the conversation about what Australian whisky could be."

◆ FUN FACT

Each bottle of Sullivan's Cove French Oak is individually numbered and comes with a card stating the cask number, distillation date, and bottling date. Because it's a single cask product, once a cask is sold out, that exact expression is gone forever.

The Verdict

A landmark bottle in the story of world whisky. Rich, complex, and unmistakably Tasmanian — Sullivan's Cove French Oak is essential drinking for anyone who thinks great whisky only comes from Scotland.
